From the October 29, 2018 issue of CBS Soaps In Depth (pp. 24-27):

The Moment of Truth!

Can Y&R's Billy keep Phyllis from finding out that he slept with Summer?

Y&R's Billy has stopped his downward spiral and taken control of his gambling addiction, thanks to a stint in rehab.  But he can't go back in time and change the most important thing--his one night of passion with Summer!  This week, the recently-reformed rogue will be forced to face the consequences of his actions, which could launch the mother of all battles. And when Phyllis is the mother in question... let's just say, we hope Genoa City denizens have their bomb shelters well-stocked, because the fallout from this triangle could turn deadly!

He Thought/She Thought
As the week begins, Billy deals with his roll in the hay with Summer by... well, ignoring it.  Unfortunately for him, Kyle is privy to what happened that night and takes his uncle to task for his boorish behavior, including not calling Summer after their night together!  Jason Thompson defends his character's actions thusly:  "Phyllis really hurt Billy.  He shared everything with her and wanted an open and honest relationship" he insists.  "So when he gets hit with the truth [about Phyllis having slept with Nick], it all feels like a lie!  A lot has happened in a short amount of time, so Billy is reeling a little bit!

"At the same time, he begins to feel badly about Summer," admits the actor.  "But he's not vocal about it.  He doesn't let anyone know that he's not feeing good about what happened."

While he might not open up to Kyle about his feelings, Billy does pick up the phone and invite Summer into his office to talk about what in his mind had been a night of revenge sex and nothing more.  Needless to say,  Summer has a completely different take on their encounter!  Indeed, when Billy finally calls her, the vixen's imagination goes wild, believing his invitation might be the beginning of a beautiful friendship (with benefits).  "Summer has been trying to convince Billy that they would be good together for a while now, but he never grabbed the bait before," says her portrayer, Hunter King.  "She keeps up a hard exterior, but [after they slept together], she does begin to hope that there is a future for them!"

And Phyllis be darned!  "You'd think Summer would think about her mother more!" laughs the young Emmy winner.  "There are times when her mom is in the back of her head, but there are times when her mom is not in her mind at all.  For the most part, Summer is focused on what she wants!"

The Truth Hurts!
Ah, but the hard truth of the matter is not everyone can get what they want!  When Summer arrives for her chat with Billy, the hunk is determined to put their fling in perspective.  Does that mean he will let her down gently?  "Yes and no," previews Thompson.  "He doesn't have a lot of remorse in him right now.  He has more hurt and anger in him.  Everyone in his world has kind of screwed him over.  Every single one of them has at some point tried to manipulate the situation or straight-out lied to him about certain things.  And he's taken it to heart.  That being said, he does try to let Summer down a little bit gently and be honest with her initially, but then he becomes more blunt."

Billy's bluntness comes from pure frustration over Summer's refusal to listen!  "I truly don't think Summer understands what Billy is saying," insists King.  "He's trying to let her down easy, but this fantasy that they could work as a couple has been built up in her head for so long that she can't see anything else.  When they finally sleep together, she thinks it's because they both wanted it... and it was the best night ever!"

"And when she finds out that Billy and Phyllis are over she has a glimmer of hope," she continues.  "Prior to that, he's been so off with her, telling Summer he's not interested in her because of Phyllis.  Summer is confused and truly is not prepared for what comes next!"

Mama Mia!
What comes next may have a lot to do with the clickety-clack of approaching stilettos as Phyllis arrives at Billy's office!  While she isn't aware that her estranged lover did the horizontal tango with her Super Girl, Phyllis has already lobbed her silky warning at Billy that she would kill him if he messed with her daughter!  Given her track record of running down people she's ticked at, will Billy try to keep Phyllis in the dark about his indiscretion?  Or is all heck about to break loose?  "I think a lot of drama is about to unfold!" teases King.

Thompson concurs.  "Billy is at an interesting place right now.  He didn't go to rehab and come back feeling like he's had a life-changing moment.  He's not coming back as this ultra-forgiving person ready to say, 'Wow, it's all on me--it's all my fault.'  That's not what's happening with him right now.  Even though he went to rehab and it feels like a climax to this story, it's not at all.  This ball keeps rolling!"
