I think it's weird to refuse legal representation, too.  Maybe he knows some big secret that will exonerate him?  I have no idea what that would be, but maybe he's counting on some big reveal that will surprise us all.  (Because if he knew about Nikki killing J.T., he'd be trying to protect her from jail.)  He seems confident that he'll get out of jail though.
