I am moving in February, the apartment I live in is great, but the safety issue outside the doors is not. I am going to start packing stuff I dont use soon, but what are some tips on getting ready to move? Maybe some pointers on how to make it go smooth? Thanks,

Get plenty of boxes and those cheap plastic containers with lids from Walmart or Dollar store.. Get magic marker so you can label what is in box. Try to put the same things from the same room into the same box. (ex: Kitchen) If you haven't used some things in over a year...CHUNK it out. (unless it has sentimental value) This would be a great time to de-clutter. Just keep out what you need for the bare essentials. This is how I start, it keeps things organized and easier to find when you unpack. Good Luck!

I do the same stuff that Marguerite mentioned. And even though I get my change-of-address card sent to the post office, I also make a list of folks to notify, that way there's no disruption at all in my mail (friends/family/magazine subscriptions/utilities/etc.). Then I overlap my utility service in case something goes wrong with the move... I get my current service scheduled to shut off a day after I move, and get my new service started a day before I'm supposed to move.

A friend of mine is married to a career military man and had to move constantly. I asked how she survived all the moving, and she said her coffee pot and her bed were her priorities. If those two things were set up, she could survive! Maybe you should keep your coffee maker in the car right with you when you move!

I have moved many times and one thing that I always do is make a open me first box.
It will have paper towels, wipes for me, wipes for cleaning, toilet paper, batteries, extension cords, remote controls, telephone, kettle, paper cups, phone list, important numbers for new area (pizza) light bulbs, plastic spoons etc. paper plates
I also bring a box of other cleaners with me so I can clean the bathroom and kitchen counter, cupboards first.
OH big part - make the box colourful so that it stands out that way it doesn't get lost in the other boxes.
It hard moving, but its also great for getting rid of stuff.

Good tip Nina, like the cleaning and necessary box ideas that have been given. I just dread the packing and unpacking part. Wish I could go to sleep and wake up and all is moved to the other apartment. Not put away, just boxed and moved. I am so blah today.
