From the February 2, 2009 issue of CBS Soaps In Depth (p. 11):

Did Tale Lead To Actor's Axing?

Veteran Y&R cast member Don Diamont taped his final scenes as Brad on December 23--right before the show's end-of-year hiatus--and will last air on Thursday, February 5.  While budget cuts likely played a large part in his dismissal, could it have been a storyline that ultimately led to the veteran being cut?  One soap critic recently chastised a former Y&R regime for mishandling the character of Brad after his secret past as George Kaplan--a man whose family was targeted by Nazis--was revealed.  Without addressing that critic's claims directly, Diamont tells In Depth that the Jewish storyline was "very out of the box for our show and unusual for daytime, period.  I was honored to play it.  It unveiled a complex Brad."
