From the April 12, 2011 issue of Soap Opera Weekly (p. six):

Adam Urges Sharon To Run!

As the jury deliberates Sharon's fate this week, Adam argues that they should leave Genoa City.

"This is going to be a roller-coaster week, with a lot of ups and downs," teases co-head writer Scott Hamner.

The week begins with Sharon taking the witness stand.  "Sharon believes that this is really her last resort.  Ordinarily, you don't put [a defendant] on the stand," Hamner points out, "but there's some very sound logic in Sharon's argument that she was the last person who would've wanted Skye dead.  She wanted Skye back in order to prove that Skye had faked her death."

Initially, Sharon makes a favorable impression.  "Sharon really takes the stand in a very assertive, composed and forceful manner," Hamner previews.  Spencer, however, quickly douses Sharon's cool composure.  "He just goes for the jugular and paints her as someone who was moved more out of emotion than logic," notes Hamner.  "He really is very fierce with her.  Sharon has already been on this incredibly stressful, emotional journey.  He skewers her.  As strong as Sharon is when she takes the stand, this prosecutor is able to paint a very different and very negative picture of her for the jury."

Despite the beating Sharon takes on the stand, she feels a glimmer of hope when Adam enters the courtroom.  "Adam and Phyllis have been doing everything in their power to come up with the proof that was going to clear Sharon," Hamner reminds.  To Sharon's disappointment, they come back empty-handed.  "Sharon's just devastated," Hamner describes.  "There have been a number of instances where she's been lifted up, only to fall again.  Each time she falls, Sharon is a little more despairing."

Then, Spencer makes a bold move and calls Adam as a hostile witness.  "The thing that is so ironic is that Adam attempted to save Sharon by planting this evidence that Skye could have faked her own death," Hamner details.  But it now "makes her look completely and utterly guilty.  There's this incredible sense of desperation and futility.  No matter what anyone does, the cards are stacked against Sharon."

On the stand, a sly Adam attempts to slip in testimony that he saw footage of Sharon and Skye struggle on the volcano.  "He tries to paint a better picture of Sharon," says Hamner.  "But it backfires on Adam.  It leads Sharon to an increasingly desperate place."

Later, Adam suggests that they skip town until they can find the evidence to clear her.  "Sharon's fear--and it's a very sound fear--is that if they go on the run, it means living her life on the run forever, and that also means she will lose Faith," Hamner explains.  On the other hand, if Sharon is convicted, she'll also be separated from her daughter.  The scribe adds, "So there's really a very, very desperate choice for her."

By week's end, the outcome for Sharon is so bleak that she's forced to carefully weigh her options.  "It's going to be very exciting and will take the story in a whole new direction," Hamner enthuses.  "This is really just a launch point for our stories moving into the spring and the summer."
