From the September 6, 2011 issue of Soap Opera Digest (p. 9):

Y&R's Cane: Leaving Town?

At Gloworm, Cane spots Lily kissing Daniel, and even though it's not the first time he saw them locking lips, it still stings.  "He has never stopped loving Lily," observes Co-Head Writer Scott Hamner.  "Everything he has done and the enormous sacrifices he has made have truly been for her benefit.  On the surface, he behaved really badly, but underneath, he is a hero and a selfless guy.  To see Lily with Daniel breaks Cane's heart, and it's double troubling because he knows he really has no leg to stand on to challenge this."
Once alone with Lily, Cane asks if she's on a date.  "She doesn't say anything, which more than answers Cane's question," says Hamner.  "Instead, she asks why he hasn't signed their divorce papers yet.  She's not being unfeeling.  It's an effort and a decision that she's making to move on from Cane."

When Daniel returns, Lily insists she will get a divorce--with or without Cane's cooperation--and leaves.  "Lily is understandably alienated from Cane at this point," Hamner notes.  "He had misled her and broken her trust so many times.  She's really made a decision to move forward with her life--no matter how difficult that is."

Later, Lily is stunned when Cane shows up with the signed divorce papers and the news that he's moving back to Australia.  "Hearing that does shake her up," explains Hamner.  "It's probably the easier path for them both at this time, if he were not to be in the picture, because seeing each other is difficult.  I think she's really stuck and isn't welcoming that news in any way.  She can't help but feel very troubled and sad and feeling the pull back toward him.  If he was fighting her, she would have something to resist and get angry at him, but he's not doing that.  So, it's very disarming for her."

Later, Neil and Devon are thrilled when Lily announces Cane's relocation plans.  "There could be no better news to them," says Hamner.  "Their biggest concern is that Lily stay resolute and not falter from this detachment.  They feel Cane could not leave soon enough."

But will he?
